Guest Joshua Dunn, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Professor in Constitutional Law and political theory, discusses with Kim the importance of Alexis de Tocqueville’s thought on political equality and social equality, and its applicability to today’s current events.  In 1831 de Tocqueville traveled to America to observe “equality” and subsequently wrote Democracy in America.  The conversation leads to interesting points regarding preservation of democracy, political equality progresses to social equality, the power of political opinion, the importance of decentralizing power, democracy cannot survive without the art of association, and most importantly, be cognitive of not giving up freedom for security.  Vote intelligently, be involved with our neighbors, and do not rely on public opinion.
