Patriotic historian and West Point graduate Ben Martin continues our series on Lincoln’s Life and Sword. Martin discusses Mr. Lincoln-Law, Congress, and Mind. Throughout his life, Lincoln’s sense of humor and public speaking skills balanced out his awkward personality and presence. However, his mockery of religion (which he likely derived from his resentment for his father) did him no favors. John Todd Stewart introduced Lincoln to his cousin Mary Todd, who were initially complete opposites. In spite of this, they eventually married in 1842. Lincoln’s marriage to Mary Todd helped open doors for his political career. Lincoln’s strong belief in truth and honesty could be said to be his substitute for organized religion. Listen to the full conversation in the first hour.

Interview with Wade Miller

Wade Miller, Executive Director at the Center for Renewing America, comments on the debt ceiling, spending, and the budget. he debt ceiling should not be getting raised. Both parties have failed to point out the risks in doing so. As a byproduct of frustrations with the US debt situation, House Republicans have negotiated one of the best spending reduction deals Miller claims to have seen. This deal, which has been put forward by McCarthy, would set a fiscal year 22 cap on fiscal year 24 expenditure, which would have various other benefits such as capping growth at 1% annually, repeal student loan bailouts, etc.  Without this speaker deal, these cuts would’ve been unthinkable. US national debt needs to be resolved before the impacts become any greater. Listen to the full show in the second hour.
