- Jody Lander fought in three of the major WWII battles of the European theater.
In September of 1944, Jody and the 82nd Airborne parachuted in near Macan, Holland. It was a beautiful September day and Jody was just sure that he would die. Their route from England to Holland was the same route that our bombers flew on bombing raids over Germany. The Germans had anti-aircraft guns along the route. Jody thought the lumbering C-47s carrying the paratroopers would be sitting ducks, flying in broad daylight on a sun shiny day. He said that the P-51 fighter escort that appeared was one of the most beautiful sights that he’d ever seen. The P-51’s peeled off, one by one, to strafe the German anti-aircraft towers giving cover for the C-47s.
In December, Jody Lander and the other guys from the 82nd were trucked to the Battle of the Bulge. It was bitterly cold at the Bulge. Since Jody was with headquarter intelligence division he slept in building and had cover. Jody said that the guys on the lines did not have shelter and many had frostbitten feet.
Jody Lander fought in three of the major WWII battles of the European theater and reflected that it is amazing that he did not receive a scratch. Jody Lander will celebrate his 96th birthday this year.
