The Akron Rural Fire Protection District seeks 2.31 more mills on its existing property tax, starting in levy year 2026 for collections beginning in calendar year 2027. The ballot puts the increase at $73,170.56 in the first full fiscal year. The question states no end date. As an example, at 2.31 mills, $10,000 of assessed value adds $23.10 a year in district tax.
Akron Rural Fire Protection District Property Tax Increase
Question 6A adds 2.31 mills to a fire district whose total 2025 levy the state lists at 2.3 mills. An increase about the size of the district's whole current levy, and one that never ends, is too heavy a step to put on the district's property owners in a single vote.
The second clause reaches further than the new mills. It frees every dollar the district receives from 2027 on, the revenue from its current levy included, from the limits in Article X, Section 20. TABOR's limits exist so that a government hands surplus revenue back to its taxpayers, and I want that check kept for property owners in this district.
I recommend a no vote on Akron Rural Fire Protection District Referred Ballot Issue 6A.

SHALL AKRON RURAL FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT TAXES BE INCREASED $73,170.56 (FIRST FULL FISCAL YEAR DOLLAR INCREASE) ANNUALLY BY INCREASING THE DISTRICT'S EXISTING PROPERTY TAX BY 2.31 MILLS COMMENCING IN LEVY YEAR 2026 (FOR COLLECTIONS BEGINNING IN CALENDAR YEAR 2027) WITH SUCH REVENUES TO BE USED TO FUND THE DISTRICT'S GENERAL OPERATIONS, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE SUPPORT OF FIRE PROTECTION, EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONSE, AND SUPPORT SERVICES FOR RESIDENTS, PROPERTY OWNERS, AND BUSINESSES SERVED BY THE DISTRICT, AND THE PURCHASE OF FIRE APPARATUS, MAINTENANCE OF AND REPAIRS TO FACILITIES, RETIREMENT CONTRIBUTIONS, AND INSURANCE; AND SHALL THE DISTRICT BE AUTHORIZED TO COLLECT, KEEP, AND SPEND ALL REVENUES RECEIVED IN 2027 AND EACH YEAR THEREAFTER WITHOUT REGARD TO ANY SPENDING, REVENUE, OR OTHER LIMITATION IN ARTICLE X, SECTION 20 OF THE COLORADO CONSTITUTION OR ANY OTHER STATUTORY LAWS OF THE STATE OF COLORADO?
The district's property tax would rise by 2.31 mills, collected from 2027, for general operations, apparatus, facilities, retirement contributions and insurance; the district could keep and spend all revenue from 2027 on without regard to revenue limits.
The district's mill levy and revenue limits would stay as they are.
The added 2.31 mills equal $2.31 a year for every $1,000 of taxable assessed value.
Example at $100,000 taxable assessed value
$100,000 × 2.31 ÷ 1,000 = $231
This is the added tax from the measure, not the total property tax bill. The amount changes if taxable assessed value changes.
The state Division of Property Taxation lists the district's general levy for tax year 2025 at 2.311 mills, less a temporary tax credit of 0.011 mills, for a total levy of 2.3 mills on an assessed value of $30,427,967. The 2.31 mills in Question 6A come on top of that levy. The division lists the district's total 2025 levy revenue below the $73,170.56 the ballot names for the first year.
The question directs the revenue to the district's general operations, including, but not limited to, the support of fire protection, emergency medical response and support services for residents, property owners and businesses the district serves. It also names the purchase of fire apparatus, maintenance of and repairs to facilities, retirement contributions and insurance.
A second clause lets the district collect, keep and spend all revenues it receives in 2027 and each year after, without regard to any spending, revenue or other limitation in Article X, Section 20 of the Colorado Constitution (the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights) or in any other statutory law of Colorado. The clause covers all of the district's revenues, including those from its current levy, not only the revenue from the added mills.
Washington County prints 6A on three ballot styles, for Precinct 2, Precinct 3 and the part of Precinct 6 in both the Arickaree School District and the fire district. The Precinct 6 ballot also carries Arickaree School District R-2's Question 4A, on how the school board is elected.
