About This Book

First published in 1962, Silent Spring remains one of the most influential books in American history. Rachel Carson’s meticulous documentation of the adverse environmental effects caused by the indiscriminate use of pesticides sparked a revolution in environmental awareness.

The outcry that followed its publication forced the banning of DDT and spurred revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. Carson demonstrated how pesticides — particularly DDT — were accumulating in the food chain, threatening wildlife and human health. She argued eloquently for responsible stewardship of the earth.

This 40th Anniversary Edition includes an introduction by Linda Lear and an afterword by Edward O. Wilson. Rachel Louise Carson (1907-1964) was an American marine biologist and conservationist whose book Silent Spring and other writings are credited with advancing the global environmental movement. She spent most of her professional career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
