The Machine Stops

The Machine Stops is a short science fiction story by E.M. Forster, first published in 1909, that has become one of the most eerily prophetic works of speculative fiction ever written. Set in a future where humanity lives in underground cells, communicating only through screens and wholly dependent on an omnipresent Machine for food, entertainment, medical care, and every other aspect of daily life, the story anticipates the internet, video conferencing, social media isolation, and technology dependence with astonishing accuracy.
