Kim Kimball is a World War II veteran who served in the United States Navy during one of the most significant periods in American military history. Enlisting at the age of 17, he served aboard the USS Hornet (CV-12), one of the most decorated aircraft carriers of the Pacific campaign.
As a radar operator on the Hornet, Kimball played a vital role in the carrier's operations, providing crucial information about enemy aircraft and ships to the ship's combat information center. The USS Hornet participated in major operations across the Pacific Theater, supporting naval aviation strikes against Japanese positions.
Following the war's conclusion, Kimball's ship joined the massive effort to bring American troops home from the Pacific, a mission known as Operation Magic Carpet. The experience of serving on a major aircraft carrier gave him a front-row seat to naval aviation operations and the dramatic events of the war's final stages.
Kimball appeared on the Kim Monson Show on Veterans Day 2020 to share his stories of wartime service, from enlisting as a teenager to witnessing carrier operations firsthand in the Pacific Theater and helping transport fellow servicemen home after victory.
