Ernest Childers

1918–2005

Ernest Childers was a soldier of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and the first Native American awarded the Medal of Honor in World War II. A second lieutenant with the 45th Infantry Division, he received the medal from General Jacob Devers in April 1944 for single-handedly clearing two German machine gun nests and capturing an enemy observer at Oliveto, Italy, on September 22, 1943, while fighting on a fractured instep. He remained in the Army and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1965.

Michael A. Hancock picked up the same ground later in the hour with his essay on moral agency.
