Annexation
The act of incorporating territory into an existing political unit such as a city, county, or nation; in local government, the process by which a municipality extends its boundaries to include additional land.
From Latin 'annexio' meaning 'a binding to,' derived from 'annectere' meaning 'to bind to or connect,' from 'ad-' (to) + 'nectere' (to tie or bind).
Usage Examples

- Crawford County commissioners unanimously rejected the annexation request, protecting property owners from industrial development.
- Urban sprawl often leads to annexation of surrounding rural areas as cities seek to expand their tax base.
