Annexation

The act of incorporating territory into an existing political unit such as a city, county, or nation; in local government, the process by which a municipality extends its boundaries to include additional land.

From Latin 'annexio' meaning 'a binding to,' derived from 'annectere' meaning 'to bind to or connect,' from 'ad-' (to) + 'nectere' (to tie or bind).

Usage Examples

  1. The city's proposed island annexation of non-contiguous farmland raised concerns about circumventing county oversight.
  2. Crawford County commissioners unanimously rejected the annexation request, protecting property owners from industrial development.
  3. Urban sprawl often leads to annexation of surrounding rural areas as cities seek to expand their tax base.
