Apologetics
The branch of theology concerned with the defense and rational justification of religious doctrine; reasoned arguments defending a position or belief system.
From Greek 'apologetikos' (suitable for defense), derived from 'apologeisthai' (to speak in defense). Originally used in legal contexts for formal defenses, the term was adopted by early Christians to describe reasoned defenses of their faith.
Usage Examples
- G.K. Chesterton's apologetics combined wit with rigorous logic to defend Christian faith against secular critics.
- The pro-life movement engages in apologetics when making scientific and philosophical arguments for the personhood of the unborn.
- Effective apologetics requires both intellectual preparation and genuine compassion for those questioning foundational beliefs.
