Industrialize

To develop industries in a country or region on a wide scale; to convert to the methods, characteristics, and social effects of manufacturing and factory production.

From 'industrial' (1774, from French industriel) combined with the suffix '-ize' meaning 'to make or become.' The term gained prominence during the 19th century Industrial Revolution to describe the transformation of agrarian economies into manufacturing-based systems.

Usage Examples

  1. The proposed wind project would industrialize 56,000 acres of Wyoming's most intact wildlife habitat.
  2. Rural communities often resist attempts to industrialize agricultural land for energy production.
  3. Proponents argue we can industrialize renewable energy production without sacrificing environmental stewardship.

From the Show

The tension between industrialization and land stewardship defined the August 26th discussion as Wyoming rancher Wendy Volk detailed how a massive wind project would industrialize pristine wildlife habitat adjacent to her family’s sixth-generation ranch.
