Multilateralism
The practice of coordinating national policies among three or more states through international institutions, often involving the transfer of sovereignty from individual nations to supranational organizations.
From Latin 'multi' (many) + 'lateralis' (of or belonging to the side), combined in the 20th century to describe diplomatic arrangements involving multiple nations.
Usage Examples
- The Swedish delegation came to the United Nations to discuss multilateralism and increasing the power of supranational organizations.
- Critics argue that multilateralism erodes national sovereignty by requiring countries to cede decision-making authority to international bodies.
- Conservatives often warn that unchecked multilateralism threatens the democratic accountability that comes from national self-governance.
