Patriotism
Love of and devotion to one’s country; the virtues and actions of a patriot, especially the willingness to defend one’s nation and uphold its founding principles.
From French 'patriote' and Latin 'patriota' meaning fellow countryman, from Greek 'patrios' meaning of one's fathers, from 'pater' meaning father.
Usage Examples
- Black patriotism, as exemplified by Booker T. Washington, views American accomplishments by black citizens as accomplishments of America itself.
- True patriotism requires the courage to defend constitutional principles even when the outcome seems hopeless.
