Proprietor

An owner of a business or property; one who has the legal right or exclusive title to something. In American free enterprise, a proprietor is an individual who owns and operates their own business venture.

From Latin 'proprietarius' meaning owner, derived from 'proprius' meaning one's own. The word entered English in the 15th century, emphasizing the concept of exclusive ownership.
