Being the most typical example or most important part of something; representing the perfect or most characteristic example of a quality or class.
From Medieval Latin quintessentia, meaning 'fifth essence,' originally referring to the fifth element (ether) that ancient philosophers believed permeated all nature and was the substance of heavenly bodies. The modern meaning evolved to represent the purest or most essential form of something.
