Resolution

A firm decision to do or not to do something; a formal expression of opinion or intention agreed upon by an official body; the quality of being resolute or determined.

From Latin 'resolutio' meaning 'a loosening, solution,' from 'resolvere' meaning 'to loosen, undo, settle.' The sense of 'firmness of purpose' developed in the 16th century.
