Carol Lucero is a grassroots volunteer and petition circulator with Protect Kids Colorado, a nonpartisan coalition working to protect children and strengthen families across the state. A mother and grandmother of ten, she joined the effort after meeting Protect Kids Colorado founder Erin Lee in 2023 and being moved by Lee’s account of her own daughter being secretly transitioned through an after-school club.
Lucero became one of the campaign’s most active circulators for three 2026 ballot initiatives. What she expected to be a small effort among friends, family, and church members grew into a statewide drive that expanded from roughly 100 volunteers to more than 3,300. At one large Colorado church she helped gather about 10,000 signatures over five consecutive weekends. When the petitions were submitted to the Secretary of State, the campaign validated 91 percent of its signatures, which Lucero described as a state record.
The three measures she helped place before voters in November 2026 would impose life sentences for child sex trafficking (the Children Are Not For Sale Act, Initiative 108), bar irreversible sex-change surgery on minors (Initiative 109), and protect girls’ sports and private spaces from biological males (Initiative 110). Lucero frames the campaign as pro-child, arguing that children should be allowed to remain children and that serious, permanent decisions should wait until adulthood.
