Dr. Mateen Elass is a pastor, author, and theologian who brings a unique personal perspective to discussions of Islam and Christianity. Born to a Syrian Muslim father who worked as an oil company executive, Elass was raised in Saudi Arabia for over a decade before converting to Christianity in 1975 at age 20.
Elass holds a PhD in New Testament studies from the University of Durham in England, along with degrees from Stanford University and Fuller Seminary. His academic credentials and personal background give him distinctive insights into both Islamic theology and Christian faith.
He has served as a pastor in churches across Wyoming, Arizona, Illinois, and Oklahoma, including positions at First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs. In 2015, he joined Voice of the Truth in Colorado Springs, a ministry bringing the gospel to the Arabic-speaking world through radio, print, and internet outreach. At Voice of the Truth, he works as an educator and trainer, helping churches and Christian groups understand Islam and effectively share their faith with Muslims.
Elass is the author of several books including "Understanding the Koran" and "Fairytale Islam: Deceptions Masking a Dark Reality." His writing examines the theological differences between Islam and Christianity and challenges how Islam is often presented to Western audiences.

Islam, Christianity, and the Foundations of American Liberty
Civic Engagement & Grassroots
“The word Islam itself means submission in Arabic. And the understanding of the Muslim world is that Muhammad was commissioned by Allah to spread Islam. And Islam spread originally, and for most of its life in this world, over 1,400 years, it spread by the sword or the threat of the sword.”
“But in Islam, the penalty for apostasy is death. And this is not a question that can be debated. There are four legal schools within Sunni Islam, and there are four legal schools within Shiite Islam. And all eight of those schools agree together that if someone leaves Islam, their life should be forfeited.”
“Christianity is a religion of love, and love requires freedom in order to be able to grow and develop. So in the Christian faith, Christians are called to go out and share the good news of Christ with the world as an offer, not as a compulsion, but as an offer.”
