Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in February 1818 on a plantation in Talbot County, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He was given the name Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey at birth. The identity of his father was never definitively established, though it was widely believed to be his white enslaver, Aaron Anthony. Separated from his mother, Harriet Bailey, at an early age, young Frederick was raised largely by his maternal grandmother, Betsy Bailey, on the outskirts of the plantation.
