Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was a polemicist, revolutionary philosopher, and advocate for human rights whose writings profoundly influenced both the American and French revolutions. Born in Dover, England, to a Quaker staymaker, Paine experienced poverty and social humiliation before emigrating to Pennsylvania in 1774. His Common Sense (1776) provided the most influential popular defense of American independence, arguing that monarchy itself was illegitimate and that government derives legitimacy solely from the consent of the governed.
