Antithesis

Direct contrast or opposition; a figure of speech in which sharply contrasting ideas are juxtaposed in a balanced or parallel phrase or grammatical structure.

From Greek 'antithesis' meaning 'opposition,' from 'anti-' (against) + 'thesis' (position, proposition). First used in English in the 15th century to describe rhetorical contrast.

Usage Examples

  1. The constitutional republic is the antithesis of central control and tyranny.
  2. Ranked choice voting is the antithesis of democracy, eliminating rather than amplifying individual voices.
