Disincentivize

To discourage an action or behavior by imposing penalties, taxes, or other negative consequences that make the activity less attractive or feasible.

From dis- (opposite of) + incentive + -ize (to make). A 20th-century coinage combining Latin elements to describe the deliberate creation of barriers intended to discourage a specific behavior or activity.

Usage Examples

  1. The proposed excise tax aims to disincentivize firearm purchases by making them more expensive for law-abiding citizens.
  2. High property taxes can disincentivize home ownership and investment in local communities.
  3. Regulators often disincentivize certain behaviors through financial penalties rather than outright prohibitions.

From the Show

The concept of disincentivization drove the October 21st discussion as Nephi Cole explained how Proposition KK’s excise tax on firearms aims to price law-abiding citizens out of exercising their Second Amendment rights.
