Marginalization

The process of treating a person, group, or concept as insignificant or peripheral; pushing individuals to the fringes of society through deliberate exclusion from mainstream economic, social, and political life.

From Latin 'margo' meaning edge or border, combined with the suffix '-ization' denoting the process of making. First recorded in English in the early 20th century to describe the deliberate pushing of groups to societal edges.

Usage Examples

  1. The marginalization of unvaccinated Americans through employment termination and travel restrictions represents a dangerous precedent for individual liberty.
  2. Historically, governments have used marginalization as a tool to isolate and control dissenting populations.
  3. True freedom cannot exist where authorities possess the power to marginalize citizens who exercise their right to medical choice.

From the Show

The concept of marginalization dominated the August 6, 2021 discussion as Leslie Manookian detailed how unvaccinated Americans face systematic exclusion from employment, public venues, and travel, with proposals ranging from no-fly lists to restrictions on voting rights.
