Overreach

The act of extending authority, influence, or actions beyond proper or legal limits; an excessive or illegitimate exercise of power that exceeds established boundaries or granted jurisdiction.

From Middle English 'overrechen' (to reach over or beyond), combining 'over' (beyond, excessively) with 'reach' (to extend). The term evolved to describe excessive extension of power or authority, particularly in political and legal contexts.

Usage Examples

  1. The EPA's attempt to regulate every drainage ditch and puddle in America represents a clear overreach of federal authority that Congress never authorized.
  2. When school boards adopt curricula developed by outside consultants without parental input, they commit an overreach into family matters that undermines local control.
  3. The Founders designed a system of limited, enumerated powers specifically to prevent government overreach into citizens' private lives and property rights.

From the Show

The concept of governmental overreach unified both segments of this broadcast. Natural resources expert Greg Walcher detailed how the EPA continues to assert jurisdiction over waters that Congress never authorized them to regulate, while Colonel Bill Rutledge observed how school boards have expanded beyond their educational mandate into social engineering. Both examples illustrate institutions exceeding their proper constitutional and statutory limits. Explore these examples in Listen to the full episode.
