Resourcefulness
The ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties; the capacity to act effectively and imaginatively, especially in challenging situations, using available resources rather than waiting for external assistance.
From 'resource' (early 17th century, from French 'ressource,' meaning 'relief, recovery') combined with the suffix '-ful' and '-ness.' Originally referred to rising again, later evolved to mean available means or expedients.
Usage Examples
- The Cedar Rapids hospital demonstrated resourcefulness by partnering with local seamstresses to create masks from HEPA filters.
- American resourcefulness during crises has historically produced innovations that government programs could not match.
- The farmers showed remarkable resourcefulness, continuing their essential work despite the pandemic restrictions.
