Word of the Day

March 24, 2025

Selflessness

Unselfish concern for the welfare of others; devotion to the interests of others; brotherly kindness. The quality of caring more about others’ needs and wishes than one’s own.

From English 'self' + '-less' (without) + '-ness' (state of being). Related to 'altruism' from French 'altruisme,' coined by philosopher Auguste Comte from Italian 'altrui' (other people), from Latin 'alter' (other).

Usage Examples

  1. True selflessness involves voluntary action to help others, not government-mandated redistribution from one person to another.
  2. Kim emphasized that the Bible's command to 'love your neighbor as yourself' includes healthy self-care, which enables genuine selflessness toward others.
  3. Brad Beck and Kim have become uncomfortable with how progressives have hijacked the concept of selflessness to justify forcible wealth transfer.

From the Show

Kim Monson introduced selflessness (discussing the related term altruism) during the March 24, 2025 broadcast to explore how political forces have corrupted its meaning. She distinguished between genuine voluntary kindness and government-mandated redistribution, noting that Brad Beck had flagged how the left uses ‘altruism’ to justify taking other people’s stuff. The concept connected to the day’s theme of individual rights versus state coercion.
