Weaponization
The act of converting something into a weapon or using it as a means of attack; the deployment of an institution, agency, or system for political purposes against opponents rather than its intended function.
Derived from 'weapon' (Old English 'wæpen') combined with the suffix '-ization' indicating a process or action. The term gained prominence in the 21st century to describe the misuse of institutional power.
Usage Examples
- The weaponization of federal agencies against political opponents undermines public trust in government institutions.
- Critics argue the FBI's raid represented the weaponization of law enforcement for partisan purposes.
- When the IRS targeted Tea Party groups, many saw it as weaponization of the tax system.
