Ty Winter serves as Colorado State Representative for House District 47, representing nine counties in southeastern Colorado including Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Las Animas, Otero, Prowers, and parts of Huerfano and Pueblo counties. Elected in 2022, he was chosen as Assistant Minority Leader in January 2024 and is part of the "Mighty 19" Republican caucus in the Colorado House.
Winter was born and raised on a fourth-generation cattle ranch in Las Animas County, Colorado. He operates a family business in Trinidad alongside his mother and brings a firsthand understanding of rural Colorado's challenges to the legislature. His background as a rancher informs his advocacy on agriculture policy, water rights, and the economic impacts of energy policy on food production.
Prior to his election to the state legislature, Winter was actively involved in local governance and community organizations. He served as chairman of the Las Animas County Republican Party from 2019 to 2022 and sat on numerous community boards including the Chicosa Water Users Association, Las Animas County Fair Board, Hoehne Fire Protection District, and Holy Trinity Academy School Board.
In the legislature, Winter focuses on rural education, agriculture, water rights, property rights, energy independence, and Second Amendment freedoms. He has been vocal about defending TABOR and fighting against what he characterizes as the overuse of safety clauses that prevent citizen referendums on legislation. He frames many political issues as rural versus urban rather than strictly partisan, advocating for the concerns of Colorado's agricultural communities.
Winter is married with two daughters and lives in Trinidad, Colorado.
