Paula Sarlls is a Marine Corps veteran who served from 1966 to 1971, including during the Vietnam era, working as an air controller. She is also a Gold Star wife, having lost her husband to Agent Orange-related cancer in 2009. Her personal experience with military service and sacrifice drives her dedication to honoring veterans.
Sarlls serves as President of the USMC Memorial Foundation, the organization responsible for maintaining and preserving the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial in Golden, Colorado. The memorial is the only Marine memorial west of the Mississippi to have been dedicated by a Marine Corps Commandant. Under her leadership, the Foundation has undertaken significant restoration work, including electrical repairs to restore flag lighting, and is working on a major memorial remodel.
In addition to her work with the USMC Memorial Foundation, Sarlls serves as president of the Women Marines Association. She was instrumental in organizing the inaugural Women Veterans of Colorado Conference in February 2024, which featured keynote speaker Colonel Nicole Malachowski, the first female pilot on the Thunderbirds.
Sarlls is known for her creative fundraising efforts, including the "Celebrate the Climb" event at Red Rocks where she climbs over 500 steps to raise funds for the memorial. In March 2024, she celebrated her 75th birthday by skydiving three times to honor the six living Iwo Jima veterans she knows personally. The Foundation also hosts annual golf tournaments and the "Buy a Brick" program for the Pathways of Service walkway.
A frequent guest on the Kim Monson Show since 2020, Sarlls has appeared nearly 40 times to promote memorial events, discuss veteran support, and share stories of healing. She emphasizes how the memorial serves as a place of healing for veterans, noting multiple instances where veterans contemplating suicide found hope and community connection at the memorial.
