January 4, 2024

Nothing has ever been accomplished in any walk of life without enthusiasm, without motivation, and without perseverance.

Jim Valvano

Jim Valvano, affectionately known as “Jimmy V,” was an iconic American college basketball coach and broadcaster. Born in 1946 in Queens, New York, Valvano’s charisma and passion for basketball propelled him into the national spotlight. He is most renowned for his tenure as head coach at North Carolina State University, where he achieved his crowning glory in 1983 by leading the Wolfpack to an improbable NCAA Championship victory, an event that etched his name in sports history. This victory became emblematic of his fighting spirit, especially memorable for his ecstatic run across the court looking for someone to hug after the final buzzer.

Valvano’s legacy extends beyond the court. Diagnosed with cancer in 1992, he became an ardent advocate for cancer research. His courage and resilience in battling the disease inspired many. His famous ESPY Awards speech, where he emphasized the importance of laughter, thought, and emotion each day, led to the establishment of the V Foundation for Cancer Research, a testament to his enduring impact. Valvano passed away in 1993, but his inspirational message and contributions to basketball and cancer research continue to resonate.
