Brad Beck joins Kim to discuss his latest essay, Generosity. In Beck’s essay, inspiration is drawn from a reimagined Aesop’s fable, not found in the traditional collection, where a dramatic scene unfolds in the animal kingdom. A lion, having hunted a doe, is about to enjoy its meal when a wolf intervenes, coercing the lion into relinquishing its prey. Amidst this confrontation, an old, mangy dog happens upon the scene, yet shows no interest and continues on its way, indifferent to the power play at hand. Beck utilizes this narrative to draw parallels between the characters and societal roles, likening the wolf to the government and the lion to the general populace. He highlights a stark contrast in their natures; the wolf, embodying forceful takeovers, and the lion, representing self-sufficiency and a willingness to share resources voluntarily.
